Some people who own a poodle may not know the difference between a miniature and standard size of this breed.

Standard Poodle

Miniature Poodle vs Standard Poodle Miniature Poodles is classified as a Toy breed by the American Kennel Club whereas Standard Poodles are in the Non-sporting Group.

The two sizes of Poodles represent different lines of breeding, with Miniature Poodles descending from the smallest Toy breeds and Standard Poodles originating from larger breeds.

The Miniature variety is the result of selectively breeding down the size of the Standard Poodle. Though both types are considered to be hypoallergenic, the coat of the Standard Poodle is less likely to shed and maybe a better choice for people with allergies.

The Standard Poodle is also more sturdy and resistant to health problems than the Miniature.

Poodle Appearance

A standard poodle is around 15 inches tall and weighs in at about 30 pounds.

A miniature poodle, on the other hand, is only 10-12 inches tall and weighs less than 20 pounds

The most noticeable difference between these two breeds is that it’s hard to spot a white stripe on the face of a miniaturized one because they are such tiny dogs. They also have smaller legs and their ears tend to be lower set on their head than those found on larger ones.

Poodle History

Miniature poodles were bred from a toy or small-sized breeds like Maltese or Pomeranian; while standard poodles come from larger breeds like the Standard Schnauzer or Tibetan Terrier.

Poodle Grooming

Both miniature and standard poodles need regular grooming; including brushing and clipping of their hair. The poodle’s curly hair can grow long and tangled if left unattended.

Poodle Temperament

As far as temperament goes, the Standard Poodle is typically more calm and laid-back than the Miniature Poodle, which can be more high-strung. The Standard Poodle is also better with children and tends not to bark as much as the Miniature.

Which Poodle Breeds A Better Pet?

The decision to choose a miniature versus a standard size is mostly up to owners.

Some people have found that miniature poodles seem more comfortable in urban areas since they do not require as much exercise and can adapt to living in smaller spaces.

If you are looking for a dog that is good with children, the standard poodle may be a better choice as they tend to be less excitable than miniatures.

Miniature poodles can also be prone to barking more than their standard counterparts.
